A Few Columns from the Toronto Papers

June 7, 2013 - Here - in no particular order - are a few recent articles on the Toronto and GTA housing market and on Toronto Bungalows specifically...

1. "Worried about the housing market? Five strategies for peace of mind" - The Globe and Mail, 2013-05-29

2. "This is not your 1990s housing market" - The Globe and Mail - 2013-06-04

3. "In Toronto, the market’s sweet spot is the humble bungalow" - The Globe and Mail - 2013-05-23

4. "This modern Toronto bungalow holds hidden surprises" - The Globe and Mail - 2013-06-07

5. And, finally - though a little older - this piece, for which The Financial Post's Garry Marr called "JustBungalows.com" for an interview, contends that Bungalows in Toronto will soon be extinct - victims of underutilization of the land. Certainly there's some truth in that: Bungalows tend to be smaller homes, and occupy larger lots.
"Bye, bye bungalow" - Financial Post - 2011-10-01

But demand for Toronto and GTA Bungalows continues - for various reasons. For aging Boomers who want nothing to do with Condos, Bungalows are perfect. For young couples and First-Time Buyers, Bungalows offer many advantages - including, often, large, accessible lower levels condusive to apartments - either for parents who winter in warmer climates several months per year, or simply to rent out and offset the mortgage. There's also the potential to expand the house according to the changing requirements of their young, growing family - without having to move. And, of course, there are investors looking to "Duplex" the property where possible, or expand and "flip" the property for a profit - either by renovation or complete re-build.

Some observers maintain we'll all be moving to condos as we age. But many, many people simply will not give up their yards, gardens, front porches, decks, over-the-back-fence neighbours, etc., etc., to live in an "apartment".

Bungalows dead? Hardly. It all depends on the Buyer! In fact, many Bungalows are simply being added on to - or demolished and replaced with newer [and, usually, larger] Bungalows!...
