The Neighbourhood Real Estate Market When you begin to consider moving, one of the first questions is, naturally, "What's your present house worth today?" In the past, when a house sold in the neighbourhood, you could simply phone an agent and ask what it sold for. You might even get a flyer in the mail - "Sold for 98% of Asking". Under Federal Privacy Laws, what a neighbour's house sold for is now considered "private information": Consent is required, in writing, from both the seller and the buyer. Because the most accurate means of establishing the value of real estate is to compare it to recent sales of similar properties, the Government made an "exemption": Essentially, sale price can be disclosed where that information is used to establish market price for another property.
